It's been quite a while given that we discussed security doors, so we believed it was due time for a refresher. Let's begin by advising ourselves what they are and why we need them.
What is a security door, and why do we require them?
In other words, and as the name suggests, a security door offers boosted defense and shielding from different ΠΟΡΤΑ ΑΣΦΑΛΕΙΑΣ unfavorable situations and scenarios; as a consequence they are most likely to be sturdy and of very solid (frequently but not always metal) building and construction, and terrific care will have been handled their design. There are a number of reasons why we might require them, primary amongst which are:
avoiding unwanted gain access to (mindful as always of emergency situation evacuations).
avoiding or decreasing the passage of fire and/or smoke.
safety-- a style that gets rid of the possibility of fingers getting trapped in the door.
Ramifications of not installing security doors ...
Well, there are numerous, and they all hinge (no pun intended) on being not able to avoid the undesirable things taking place: if your doors are not protect then it's simpler for individuals to break in and take or damage your items and home; fire and smoke will spread far more rapidly; and individuals's fingers can get caught in closing doors. So we're talking about different points on the scale which vary from real death through breaking the law and contravening regulations through badly harmed hands and fingers through loss/damage of/to important possessions to raised insurance premiums ... with all sorts of industrial ramifications.
Need we state more?
PAS 24.
This is your assurance that the door is being kept track of by a UKAS accredited certification body to ensure compliance with PAS 24:201.
Improved security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. External doorsets and windows intended to provide a level of security appropriate for dwellings and other buildings exposed to similar danger and the specific and the pertinent product specific requirement for general performance referenced in BS 6375 Components 1, 2 and 3.
PAS 24, like most British Standards, is a minimum requirement. To put it simply it doesn't consist of higher or lower grades for security, and so doors that are checked to the specifications of the standard either pass or stop working. Although some of the doorsets that pass will be a little more powerful than the minimum needed, a minimum standard encourages engineers to develop the door to pass at the minimum requirements. This makes economic and environmental sense and the effectiveness of doors certificated to this standard has shown that the minimum levels set by the British Standards were just about spot on.
Classes of usage.
Since there are all sorts of various environments where security doors are needed, a lot of which are utilized by the general public, as you might anticipate there is a British Standard to assist direct you through what type of door you require: DD171:1987.
The basic sets out 4 levels or classes of use:.
Light duty-- radio frequency of use and probably not that extreme, such as in a private home.
Medium duty-- medium frequency of usage, some chance of a mishap, however the door is not generally used by the public-- for instance an internal workplace door.
Strong-- lots of usage, including by the public, and a reasonably high opportunity of an accident-- for instance in a retail outlet.
Extreme responsibility-- the only image you need to have in your mind here is a school when the bell opts for playtime and all the children run towards the door. Enough said!
Safehinge?
Setting up a secure door to prevent undesirable gain access to and the spread of fire and smoke is something, however how do we prevent fingers getting trapped? This is where Safehinge can be found in-- a type of door hinge which entirely gets rid of any possibility of fingers getting trapped by using an expert pivot set and a curved (aluminium) profile-- the gap at the hinge when opening and closing is for that reason removed.
